How to follow your intuition

What is intuition?

Intuition is defined as the ability to understand something instinctively, and people tend to have different explanations for why this happens. Many say it’s a ‘gut’ feeling related to our nervous system or ‘second brain’ that alerts us when something is or isn’t quite right. Others say it’s a spiritual sixth sense or special insight – a ‘knowing’ – that’s been gifted to us. All tend to agree that it’s not based on a conscious or logical thought process.

Examples of intuition include:

  • Knowing a house isn’t for you when viewing to rent/buy the moment you walk in
  • Meeting someone and instantly knowing you have a lot in common and will get on well
  • Feeling uneasy about someone, knowing that they will let you down or hurt you

How to use intuition to your advantage

So, now that you know what intuition is, how can you benefit from it? It’s best to trust yourself. When you get that gut feeling or sense that something is better done differently, or that you need to share information with someone, or walk home a different way, then listen to yourself! You are your own best judge, and your intuition is there to protect you.

Of course, it’s important to stop and think before acting on intuition. Ask yourself why did that thought come to you, or why you are getting that feeling from someone. What you need to do will fall into place as long as you listen to yourself.

Gain more insight

Some people will say that they rarely get this intuition, that they don’t have that instinct of what to do next; others say they’d like to have it more often. A wonderful way of opening your subconscious mind and letting your intuition flow is through meditation.

Meditating might sound difficult, but it can be as simple as sitting quietly and focussing on your breathing.  Whenever your mind wanders, just gently bring your attention back to your breathing again. You might prefer to repeat a mantra or positive affirmation, or even visualise an item, person or situation that makes you happy. Whichever technique works for you, accessing a meditative state can lead to your intuition kicking in to provide the valuable insight you need.

For example, if you’ve lost something, instead of rushing around trying to find it, sit down and close your eyes. Take just a few minutes to let your mind rest and focus on the item you’re looking for. Visualise it in your mind, imagine finding it and holding it. You will know when it’s time to open your eyes, and more often than not, the first place you look next will be where you find your lost item.

Dreams and the messages they send

It is also said that messages in dreams come from the subconscious mind, and can be your intuition trying to tell you something. But, as dreams can sometimes be scrambled, they often don’t make much sense to us!.

Many of our readers can help decipher your dreams and explain their hidden meanings. The more you understand them, the more you can act on their messages. Remember, there’s always a message out there for you, and very often it can be accessed via your own mind!
