Magic in the air this Halloween
It’s October, the nights are drawing in, and there’s a little magic in the air.
For those of us who love the spiritual side of life, Halloween is a wonderful time to explore our intuition, reflect on loved ones who have passed and discover the stories behind some of our favourite traditions.
But where did Halloween begin, and why has it become so closely connected with the spirit world?
What is Halloween?
Celebrated on 31st October, Halloween is also known as All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before All Saints’ Day. Its history is a fascinating mix of Christian traditions and older Celtic and Pagan customs, including seasonal harvest celebrations.
Today, Halloween is all about costumes, pumpkins and a little spooky fun. Yet many people still use this time to remember loved ones and reflect on the mysteries of life and what might lie beyond it.
The veil between worlds
One of the best-known spiritual beliefs surrounding Halloween is that the veil between our world and the spirit world becomes thinner, making it a special time to feel close to those who have passed.
For some, this can involve lighting a candle, looking through old photographs or simply taking a quiet moment to remember someone special.
You might find comfort in recalling a happy memory or noticing something that reminds you of a loved one. There’s no need to look for dramatic signs; sometimes, the simplest moments can feel the most meaningful.
Pumpkins, costumes and the legend of Jack
Have you ever wondered why we carve pumpkins at Halloween?
It is said to connect with the wonderfully spooky tale of Stingy Jack, a folkloric character who tricked the devil. When Jack eventually passed away, unwelcome in either heaven or hell, he was left wandering between the two with a glowing coal inside a hollowed-out turnip for a lantern.
That’s why traditionally people carved turnips and other vegetables into lanterns. Later pumpkins became popular in America because they were easier to carve and became the inspire the jack-o’-lantern we know today!
Wearing costumes at Halloween is also connected to traditional beliefs, when people would wear animal skins, straw outfits and masks to disguise themselves from wandering spirits.
Over centuries the custom of dressing up evolved into the fun celebration we enjoy today.
Exploring your spiritual side
Aside from the celebrations, Halloween can be a perfect opportunity to slow down and listen to your intuition.
You might enjoy a little quiet reflection, journalling about your dreams or exploring tarot and other spiritual practices.
If you wish to remember someone who has passed, try sitting somewhere peaceful with a photograph and reflecting on the love and memories you shared.
Always approach spiritual practices in a way that feels comfortable and reassuring to you.
Welcome a little Halloween magic
Whether you’re dressing up, carving pumpkins or simply enjoying a cosy evening at home, Halloween offers a chance to embrace mystery, remember those we miss and reconnect with our spiritual side.
Remember, keep an open heart, trust your intuition and enjoy the magic of the season.
Love and Light!
